Designing for Life

Healthcare

A personal service approach guided by experienced working principals

Since 1989 throughout New England, LWDA has been committed to a client centric approach of quality service and design for our healthcare clients’.  This approach, along with our in depth experience, allows us to be responsive and creative in matching our client’s institution vision and project goals (program, design, budget and schedule), and create real healthcare brand value and patient experience.

Our working principals provide a proactive project management style that allows us to address issues before they become challenges.  The number of healthcare clients we retain and our strong working knowledge of the regulatory process substantiates our reputation and dedication to our client’s needs.

Our extensive knowledge, of all level of ambulatory, acute, rehabilitation, senior care and senior living, allows us to more fully design for the Continuum of Care, with a Patient Centered Care Design Approach.

Academic Medical Centers and Specialty Hospitals

Designing for Innovation and Diverse Care

We work with academic and specialty institutions to successfully plan, reposition and modernize complex facilities that fulfill unique care missions for diverse populations.

The Boston Medical Center (BMC) Master Plan ($165M construction, $240M project cost) consolidates two campuses, optimizes departmental relationships and right sizes 35 departments. The goals are to increase overall operational efficiency, reorganize and improve academic integration throughout the campus, augment primary public circulation pathways, and improve the three major departments of Emergency, Imaging and Surgery.  Phase-One of the Master Plan Implementation includes the repositioning and rebranding of the 1975 Yawkey Pavilion with a new Lobby, Cafeteria, 50,000 sf Maternity Department, and associated outpatient departments and building improvements across four floors. The design intent is to bring a new brand of care and healing environment to BMC.

Likewise, our diverse experience at Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Partners Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital encompasses a variety of specialty projects of all scales, complexity and brand imagery.

Renovation, reconfiguration and upgrading healthcare institutions represent a large part of our work. Larger institutional projects frequently involve complex multi-department renovations in occupied spaces with complicated interrelated existing conditions.  Our working principals use their leadership and experience to lead multifaceted user groups and leadership teams to work together and solve challenges.

We emphasize communication and data management as effective tools in these complex physical and operational environments. To involve clients more effectively, we have developed a process of client/architect interactive 3D Virtual Design that leverages design visualization and building data management. By building a strong understanding of the project through visualization, we can work with clients to address goals throughout the entire design process rather than at the end, when changes are more costly.

Community Hospitals and Care Networks

Serving the needs of the ‘Personal’ community

Hallmark Health is a community focused health system with two hospitals and multiple outpatient facilities

Community hospitals serve a unique role to help bridge across personal physician medical practices, specialty services, and academic teaching hospitals, in a community setting that focuses on high quality care in an atmosphere of warmth and compassion.  As architects, we work with each hospital to establish their own personal, community and cultural brand, and to support their medical services.  Levi + Wong Design’s patient-centered design approach assists community hospitals in modernizing their facilities to position their place in the healthcare market as their medical needs evolve.

We have worked with Emerson Hospital for over seven years on small to midsize projects that have redefined their brand image, including the main lobby, primary corridors and numerous medical and surgical departments and support departments.  When budgets, schedules and space are tight, pre-investigation and space assessments become critical.  Every job, no matter how small, is important to us – for this reason every job is managed by an experienced team and principal.

At Hallmark Health’s hospitals, we have assisted with numerous transitions over ¬ 26 years on literally hundreds of projects, from Fit Master Plans, to major multi-phased multi-department renovations in the ED, Admitting, Lab and Imaging, to all levels of specialty departments including Cardiovascular, Endoscopy, Maternity and Psychiatric services.  Our approach has always been patient centered and focused on patient experience, even before it was fashionable.  We work closely with facilities management, administration and users to execute integrated projects that meet the needs of our clients.
